Life within the last ten years would not have been complete without hearing a certain duck quack interrupting your favorite television show. Since 2000, Gilbert Gottfried was the voice of the iconic duck that quacked "AFLAC!" for the insurance company that shares the same name.
Now, the legendary duck has lost his well-known voice. Last week, AFLAC fired Gottfried after posting jokes on his Twitter about the recent Japan earthquake and tsunami.
Gottfried has since apologized saying, "I sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by my attempt at humor regarding the tragedy in Japan. I mean no disrespect, and my thoughts are with the victims and their families."
This wasn't the first time Gottfried made jokes about a tragedy. Not long after 9/11, Gottfried also got in trouble for making jokes about the recent terrorist attack. Ever since he has been comically known for his "Too Soon" jokes and it has always been a part of his act.
On top of Gottfried's apology, many celebrities including Whoopi Goldberg and Howard Stern have voiced their support for him.
AFLAC is now in search of a new voice for their mascot. I don't think they will be successful in finding a new voice as iconic as Gottfried's. The duck is so well known because of his voice. I think AFLAC overreacted and should seriously reconsider hiring him back.
